Partner Spotlight: Puente a la Salud Comunitaria

Ending Hunger and Improving Public Health in Rural Mexico

Vista Leadership Institute would not be possible without the collaboration of inspiring partner organizations like Puente a la Salud Comunitaria. Founded in 2003 by Kate Seely and Katherine Lorenz, the organization’s name means a Bridge to Community Health. Team Puente contributes to food security of the Oaxacan community and local agriculture through promoting the cultivation, consumption and commercialization of amaranth.

Known to the Aztecs as huauhtli, the highly nutritious grain amaranth has been cultivated for thousands of years and served as the bulk of the region’s indigenous diet before the Spanish conquest. Today, Amaranth is still a vital crop. Working together with families, farmers, local organizations, and public health authorities, Puente a la Salud Comunitaria is dedicated to the eradication of malnutrition and the improvement of health in rural Oaxaca.

The Institute’s Belief in Local Community Action

Through our partnership, members of Vista Leadership Institute will volunteer with Puente a la Salud Comunitaria during the leadership retreat in Oaxaca. An integral part of the Institute’s leadership development program is for you to engage in local community action in a different part of the world. Local community work while in Oaxaca seeds global thinking, reflection and awareness of your personal impact, inspiring you as a leader to connect and contribute in innovative ways. This level of understanding and awareness helps leaders achieve excellence at home as well.
